Getting Started With Morning Work

Materials Used In Activities

I always encourage teachers to use what they have or use what’s cheap. However, there are always teachers who would like to locate specific items that I may have used in activities. So I created a list below to help. Just click on any highlighted text to see where I secured various items.

Sight Word Paper Punch Garland:

  • Editable Sight Word Cards-Included in this packet
  • Strips of colorful paper
  • Letter paper punches (you could also use letter stamps instead or just have students write their words on the strips of paper)
  • Small stapler – you can get these at the Dollar Tree

Sight Word String the Lights:

  • Editable Sight Word Cards-(Activity #1)
  • Holiday Lights Letter Cards –Included in this packet
  • Plastic Clips or Clothespins

String Your CVC Lights.

  • Plastic links or clothespins
  • Christmas light letter cards or foam lights with letters written on them (in this set)
  • Self-correcting CVC Christmas tree cards

Linking Ginger Numbers and Quantities

  • Plastic links
  • Ginger Themed Number Cards and Quantity Cards printed on cardstock and laminated for durability (Included in this set)

Peppermint Stick and Sand Sight Words Trays.

  • Editable Peppermint Stick Sight Word Cards (available in this set)
  • Small cake pan or cookie sheet – I get mine from the Dollar Tree
  • Plastic Candy Cane, Thematic Pencil, or candy cane made from intertwined pipe cleaners
  • Salt with peppermint extract (and food coloring of your choice) added.

Playdoh Counting Math Mats

  • Playdoh or homemade dough
  • Laminated number mats printed on cardstock for durability

Hidden Christmas Tree Bulbs

  • Small plastic bulbs (If you can’t locate these small bulbs, you can always use buttons or pony beads in the same colors.  These are the ones that you find in old fashion ceramic trees.)
  • Therapy Putty

  • Small plastic miniature bulbs (If you can’t locate these just use buttons or pony beads. Your students will still love it.)
  • Graphing mat with ’record how many” option, printed on cardstock and laminated

Race To Fill Your Ornament

  • 1 dice (use different types of dice to differentiate this activity)
  • Thematic colored Pompoms available at the Dollar Tree
  • 2 Tongs

Deck The Halls Ten Frame Numbers Before and After Self-Correcting Cards

  • Christmas Tree Ice Cube Trays from the Dollar Tree
  • Deck the Halls Playing Mat (Included in this set.)
  • Small little candy cane erasers to use as manipulatives found at Target’s Dollar Spot (You can also use buttons, class flat marbles or pony beads)
  • Self-correcting cards printed on cardstock, laminated, folded and secured with a clothespin

  • Small decorative miniature lights or flat red, green and white/clear marbles as ornaments (You can find these on Amazon or at the Dollar Tree)
  • Dry erase marker

Holiday Sticker Count.

  • Sticker recording sheet printed on paper. One for each child. (There are two to choose from.)
  • One sheet allows students to trace and total up all the stickers used.
  • One sheet allows you to place a specific sticker next to a box. Students use those three types to outline the template and then count up the individual stickers of each type and record the number next to the sticker in the box.
  • Small thematic stickers – Any kind of small stickers will work.

Gel Bead Sort By Color

  • Gel beads in same colors as cookie cutters (I got red, white and green ones.  I only use about 1/2 of the bottle they send and save the rest for later.)
  • Thematic cookie cutters.  You can find these at Dollar Tree.
  • Light Table (optional)

Gel Bead Roll and Win

  • Thematic cookie cutters-I found them at the Dollar Tree
  • Gel beads in same colors as cookie cutters
  • Dice (It’s easy to differentiate this activity just by changing the number or type of dice you use.)

Constructing Letters And Words

  • Winter transparent table scatter (Available at Hobby Lobby) and flat green, white, and red flat marbles (available at Dollar Tree, Micheals or another craft store.)
  • Holiday Sight Word Cards (Or letters)
  • Light Table (optional)

Ornament Containers Count and Record

If you can not find the miniature containers at the Dollar Tree, you can always use any small container.  Even something like a small clear container that you get for to-go salad dressing would work.

Just stick a little holiday sticker on the top to differentiate between the two different types of containers that you will be using.

  • Small sensory bin with fun thematic filler.  (I got some great erasers, embellishments and the like that I’m going to add to mine.)
  • Capital/Lowercase Letter puzzles printed on one color of cardstock, laminated and cut apart.

Holiday Ornaments Sounds Matching Puzzles

  • Small sensory bin with fun thematic filler
  • Lowercase/Beginning Letter Sounds puzzles printed on one color of cardstock, laminated and cut apart.

Holiday Ornaments CVC Word Puzzles

Jingle Bell Patterns

  • Silver, green and red jingle bells (or colored pompoms to act as bells if you can’t find them) . All of these options are available at the Dollar Tree
  • Playing mat printed on cardstock and laminated
  • Self-correcting cards printed on cardstock, laminated and folded to hide the answer.
  • Clothespins (fun thematic foamy or item hot glued to clothespin optional)
  • Tongs or tweezers for moving items

I Spy An Letter Match Up

  • Flat holiday-colored marbles (Available at the Dollar Tree) programmed with letters of your choice
  • One editable playing mat per student at a station with your selected letters (Included in this set.)

  • Flat glass marbles (Available at the Dollar Tree) that are programmed with sight words of your choice.

Trim Your Tree With Numbers

Balancing Bulbs

  • 2 pieces of 12 x 12 (or a large flat piece such as that) Styrofoam with a pine tree painted on the top.
  • Several white golf tees placed on the tree for balancing bulbs.
  • Several small miniature ornaments with CVC words written on them with a silver or black Sharpie or white paint pen
  • Stocking to hold bulbs available at the Dollar Tree

Holiday Straw Necklace
