Handwriting instruction can be tricky and frustrating for students and for teachers. With more and more students coming to early childhood classrooms with fewer and fewer fine motor skills, this is now more true than ever before. We can use as much handwriting help in kindergarten as we can get. I promise you, my classroom is no exception. You will see funky pencil grips in my classroom pictures. Today in kindergarten, even the brightest students struggle with the mechanics of handwriting. Lack of strength, the push to do more and faster, and the absence of developmentally appropriate tools and activities means students avoid tasks that involve writing because . . . well . . . it's just too hard. Let me show some tips and tricks on how I support handwriting in my own classroom.
Daubers or Fingerprints
Personally, I don't mind messy fingers. It's not something that bothers me at all as a teacher and it didn't bother me as a mom with my boys. As long as kids are engaged and learning, let them be messy. But I know I may not be the majority and when it comes to fingerprint activities, I may have an alternative that will make everyone happy.
