Description

This activity is aligned to common core standards:
RF.K.3.a Demonstrate basic knowledge of letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or most frequent sound for each consonant.
RF.K.2.d-Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel and final sounds in three phoneme words.
RF.1.2.c Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel and final sounds in single syllable words.

This differentiated word work activity can be used with or without small miniature ornaments like the ones you can purchase at a dollar store or in Target’s dollar bin. Provide either the beginning letter sound cards, cvc or ccvc/cvcc cards for your students depending upon their level of readiness. A student selects a card and reads the picture. If you are using miniature bulbs, they can then string the bulbs (which you have previously written letters on with a permanent marker) to write the word. The cards are self-correcting so that your students simply open them up to see if they are correct. Don’t have the miniature bulbs? No problem. There is a playing mat also available for all three tiers. Students can select a card and place it on the playing mat. They then write their answer on the mat’s bulbs and open the card to see if they are correct.

Teachers: Print a playing mat for each child in your station or center. Then print, laminate and cut apart all the playing pieces. You will then fold the playing card in on the dotted line and secure it with a clothes pin. Playing cards are color coded to match either the beginning sounds, cvc or cvcc/ccvc playing mats.

If you are planning on using miniature bulbs, be sure to use a permanent marker to write letters on them. Label and store them in egg cartons for easy use.
