Description

This activity is great for practicing CVC, blends, diagraph, nonsense word, and sight word fluency. The sight word option is editable which makes it perfect for differentiating your instruction.

This Word Work Highway set will give students the opportunity to practice reading fluency with a fun, engaging twist. Just add a car and a timer and your students can practice racing through streets, boulevards, highways, and drives to better their fluency time.

Here’s how it works. Students use a small car and place it at the ’Go’ sign. Another student can keep time for them. I like my students to use one minute as their time. Students read their words. If read correctly, then they drive over the word to the next one. When the timer is done, they count the words they drove over, and that is the number of words they read. Twisty roads challenge your students by having them use their bodies to move with the track. It creates an engaging and FUN word work activity.

You can choose to have your students keep track of their progress on the small assessment sheets. Or if you prefer, I have a chart you can use to keep track of progress. It’s a great way to assess students. Just enter students name on the first chart and the rest of the charts will
automatically populate.
This set includes a raceway for nonsense words, CVC words, blends, digraphs, and an EDITABLE sight word edition as a Powerpoint file as well.
Teacher Instructions: There are two types of files included in this zipped file. One file, the PDF, includes nonsense, CVC, blends, and digraphs that are NOT programmable. The Powerpoint file which includes an editable sight word mat IS programmable. While I have already typed words into the file, you can simply change those to reflect the sight words you need. You will want to download and install the font. KG Miss Kindergarten to match the fonts from the other mats. It is a free font that you can get HERE.
Print off the driving mats, laminate, cut the access margin on one page, and use packing tape to put the two pieces together.

Hey, I’m Marsha

Welcome to my blog!

With nearly 20 years of experience as a full-time kindergarten teacher, I’m committed to creating a classroom where learning is joyful, engaging, challenging, and fun. Each day, I work to ensure that my students feel successful through instruction that considers their unique interests, learning profiles, and readiness levels. I believe that students should be excited to come to class and enjoy a myriad of hands-on activities that encourage exploration and discovery.

While I continue to teach full-time, I find so much joy in connecting and building friendships with teachers worldwide. It’s why I started this blog back in 2012. My hope has become a reality as I have been able to forge relationships with teachers, sharing ideas and building friendships beyond my little neck of the woods through professional development sessions and this blog.

So by all means, take some time to look around and explore A Differentiated Kindergarten. Gather some new ideas, fun tips, and most importantly, don’t forget to reach out and say, ‘Hi!’
