Description

This write the room activity will appeal to your kinesthetic learners while meeting the various readiness levels of your students.
This activity meets Common Core State Standards:
K.CC.3 Write numbers from 0-20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
K.CC.5 Count to answer ‘how many’ questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20 count out that many objects.

There are two tiers included in this activity. The first tier is coded with an orange border. This focuses on numbers 1-10. With Tier 1a recording sheet, students simply count the number of objects on each card. This is a great exploratory activity for your students just mastering their numbers. With Tier 1b recording sheet, the students count the number of objects on each card and record it in the square. Then write the number that comes immediately before and after the number in the spaces on either side. For Tier 2, students complete the same activities but for numbers 11-20. So actually, there are four activities in one.

Teacher instructions: Print, laminate and cut the counting pieces. Place them around your room for your students to discover. You may either print and laminate the recording sheets for reuse with a dry erase marker or print off as many copies as you need for students to use with a pencil. Students will travel around your room to discover how many of each fall leaf-type object is on each card with a corresponding colored border.

If you prefer not to place these around your room, you can always place the counting pieces in a bucket or container for students to draw out and answer. If you enjoy this activity please check out the other items available in my store or on my blog.

Hey, I’m Marsha

Welcome to my blog!

With nearly 20 years of experience as a full-time kindergarten teacher, I’m committed to creating a classroom where learning is joyful, engaging, challenging, and fun. Each day, I work to ensure that my students feel successful through instruction that considers their unique interests, learning profiles, and readiness levels. I believe that students should be excited to come to class and enjoy a myriad of hands-on activities that encourage exploration and discovery.

While I continue to teach full-time, I find so much joy in connecting and building friendships with teachers worldwide. It’s why I started this blog back in 2012. My hope has become a reality as I have been able to forge relationships with teachers, sharing ideas and building friendships beyond my little neck of the woods through professional development sessions and this blog.

So by all means, take some time to look around and explore A Differentiated Kindergarten. Gather some new ideas, fun tips, and most importantly, don’t forget to reach out and say, ‘Hi!’
