Description

Pompom Alphabet Mats are a great addition to your Alphabet/Letter Centers.

If you like these types of activities, look for the other Alphabet Mats available in my store or save big by checking out the Alphabet Mats Growing Bundle.

Recognizing letters and learning their formation is one of the first exposures to literacy that a child has. Without a strong understanding of the Alphabet, a student’s ability to read could be greatly impacted. That knowledge of the Alphabet is commonly considered one of the best predictors of later achievement in reading. So giving our students various materials and ways to manipulate letters is imperative.

But teaching letter recognition and formation doesn’t have to be boring. By offering various tools and objects to create meaningful instruction, students will remain focused and engaged on learning. Pompom and dauber mats are just a couple of the items you’ll find in my independent work stations. They are definitely a favorite for my students. My students love having the choice to use materials that they enjoy and I like that they are working independently, building fine motor skills, and letter recognition.

Included in this set:
•26 Colored Pompom Alphabet Mats with tracing and writing task
•26 Black and White Pompom Alphabet Mats with tracing and writing task
•26 Colored Pompom Alphabet Mats with cover it task
•26 Black and White Pompom Alphabet Mats with cover it task
•26 Printable Dauber Worksheets with tracing and writing task
•26 Printable Dauber Worksheets with cover it task

Teacher instructions: There are several variations from which you can choose. Select the option you would like to use and print these in color or in black and white and then laminate to extend the life of this activity. Students will use tongs or tweezers (optional) to move pompoms to make the capital and lowercase letters and beginning letter sound picture on the mat. Then depending on which variation you have selected, they will use a dry erase marker to trace the letters and then try them on their own, or they will continue to use pompoms to cover the letters they find at the bottom of the mat that match the letter they created.

A printable version of this activity is also available for use with bingo daubers. Similar to the other versions, you will find a set that offers the ability to trace and write the letters and another version for covering the letter.

Tips: For students who have mastered very few letters so far, only place those letters and the letters you are currently working on in this center. Too many letters can be overwhelming. As they master more letters, you can increase the number of mats included and use these to reinforce letter/sound identification and formation

Hey, I’m Marsha

Welcome to my blog!

With nearly 20 years of experience as a full-time kindergarten teacher, I’m committed to creating a classroom where learning is joyful, engaging, challenging, and fun. Each day, I work to ensure that my students feel successful through instruction that considers their unique interests, learning profiles, and readiness levels. I believe that students should be excited to come to class and enjoy a myriad of hands-on activities that encourage exploration and discovery.

While I continue to teach full-time, I find so much joy in connecting and building friendships with teachers worldwide. It’s why I started this blog back in 2012. My hope has become a reality as I have been able to forge relationships with teachers, sharing ideas and building friendships beyond my little neck of the woods through professional development sessions and this blog.

So by all means, take some time to look around and explore A Differentiated Kindergarten. Gather some new ideas, fun tips, and most importantly, don’t forget to reach out and say, ‘Hi!’
