Description
Gingerbread
This activity is aligned with Common Core State Standards:
For Kindergarten:
RF.K.3.a Demonstrate basic knowledge of letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or most frequent sound for each consonant.
RF.K.2.d-Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds in three-phoneme (CVC) words.
For 1st Grade:
RF.1.2.c-Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds in spoken single-syllable words.
This I-Spy activity blends two of my most favorite activities: write the room AND I-Spy. Instead of merely reading words and recording words they find while writing the room, in this activity students will use magnifying glasses to inspect gingerbread friends for hidden pictures and words. Once found, they will then use the various recording sheets available to write their answers. This unit is tiered to meet the various readiness levels of your students This activity is ideal for differentiating instruction to meet the various learning profiles of your students as well. It appeals to kinesthetic learners who need to move, logical learners that like a great puzzle, and your intrapersonal learners who enjoy working on their own. If you prefer, however, you can merely cut the gingerbread out and place the cards in a festive bucket and have students pull the cards out and inspect them at a center, recording their answers as they pull each card. There is an activity for all your students regardless of their readiness level.
Here’s what’s included:
Tier 1 has a CVC picture hidden on each of 12 playing cards card. In Tier 1a students record the beginning letter sound on either a colored or black/white recording sheet. In Tier1b, they record the ending sound on either a colored or black /white recording sheet. In Tier 1c they record all the sounds they hear in the CVC word on either a colored or black/white sheet. And in Tier1d they match the cvc with a rhyming word and write all the sounds they hear in the word on the colored or black/white recording sheet..
Tier 2 has students searching each of 12 cards for one real and nonsense word. They then sort and write these words under their appropriate category on either the colored or black/white recording sheet.
Tier 3 has students searching for a CVC word each of 12 cards and then sorting the words they find under the corresponding word family picture on either the color or black/white recording sheet.
