Description

Number Recognition, Addition and Subtraction Fun.
This write the room activity will appeal to your kinesthetic learners while meeting the various readiness levels of your students.
This activity meets Common Core State Standard:
K.CC.3: Write numbers from 0-20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20.
K.CC.5: Count to answer ‘how many’ questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20 count out that many objects.
K.OA.A.5: Fluently add and subtract to five.

There are three tiers to this activity. The blue tier are for your learners who still have not mastered counting and writing numbers 0-20. This blue tier features 12 squares with various numbers of objects 0-20. Students count the objects, write the number in the box on their recording sheet and then write the number that comes before and after. The next tier, the pink tier, is for students beginning to add (or subtract). There are cards with pictures of two objects and corresponding recording sheet. Students search the room for these cards, record the number of each object and then add them together (or subtract), recording their answer. The red tier, for you most advanced students, can be used for your students who are ready for addition (and subtraction) to 10. Each addition tier has 2 sets of cards and corresponding recording sheets to extend centers. These recording sheets are available in color or black and white.

Teacher instructions: Print, laminate and cut the counting pieces. Place them around your room for your students to discover. You may either print and laminate the recording sheets for reuse with a dry erase marker or print off as many copies as you need for students to use with a pencil. There are both color and black and white copies from which to choose. Students will travel around your room to discover how many of each cold weather items are on each card with a corresponding colored border. As students become more fluent, I often add a timer to the mix, encouraging them to add quicker but continue to be accurate. If you prefer not to place these around your room, you can always place the counting pieces in a bucket or container for students to draw out and answer. Hey, I’m Marsha

Welcome to my blog!

With nearly 20 years of experience as a full-time kindergarten teacher, I’m committed to creating a classroom where learning is joyful, engaging, challenging, and fun. Each day, I work to ensure that my students feel successful through instruction that considers their unique interests, learning profiles, and readiness levels. I believe that students should be excited to come to class and enjoy a myriad of hands-on activities that encourage exploration and discovery.

While I continue to teach full-time, I find so much joy in connecting and building friendships with teachers worldwide. It’s why I started this blog back in 2012. My hope has become a reality as I have been able to forge relationships with teachers, sharing ideas and building friendships beyond my little neck of the woods through professional development sessions and this blog.

So by all means, take some time to look around and explore A Differentiated Kindergarten. Gather some new ideas, fun tips, and most importantly, don’t forget to reach out and say, ‘Hi!’
