Description

A Differentiated Nonsense Word Activity to Meet Common Core Standards
Common Core Kindergarten RF.2..d Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel and final sounds in three-phoneme (CVC) words.
Common Core Grade 1 RF.2d Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds in three-phoneme CVC words

Attached here find two nonsense word games in one. The first nonsense game is tiered to meet the various degrees of readiness in your classroom. There are 60 CVC real and nonsense word bone cards and there are 60 CVCC/CCVC real and nonsense word bone cards. You can also choose from a colored recording sheet or black and white for the first game.

Teachers: Laminate and cut out pieces. Blue bordered cards are for 3 lettered nonsense and CVC words. Green borders are for four lettered nonsense and CCVC/CVCC play.
To Play: Teacher places appropriately tiered pieces in a bucket. One at a time students pull a card from the bucket. The student then reads the card and writes the word either on the real or nonsense side of their game board. If a student pulls a card they don’t need, if one side of their record sheet is full, they put the card back and loose their turn. The first person to fill both sides of their board must read the board to their partner before they can win! To create added interest, place the cards in a themed bucket or even a pith helmet like real paleontologist sometimes wear.

The second game is for group play. Add the game cards from the end of this unit to the nonsense/real word cards. Students take turns pulling cards. If they get a volcano card, all their cards go back in the bucket. If they find a dinosaur bone they get to take a card from a friend, if they find dinosaur footprints they get another turn, and if they drop their dinosaur egg they have to put two cards back in the bucket. And if they find a T-Rex, the game is over. Everyone counts their cards and the one with the most is the winner.

Marsha

Hey, I’m Marsha

Welcome to my blog!

With nearly 20 years of experience as a full-time kindergarten teacher, I’m committed to creating a classroom where learning is joyful, engaging, challenging, and fun. Each day, I work to ensure that my students feel successful through instruction that considers their unique interests, learning profiles, and readiness levels. I believe that students should be excited to come to class and enjoy a myriad of hands-on activities that encourage exploration and discovery.

While I continue to teach full-time, I find so much joy in connecting and building friendships with teachers worldwide. It’s why I started this blog back in 2012. My hope has become a reality as I have been able to forge relationships with teachers, sharing ideas and building friendships beyond my little neck of the woods through professional development sessions and this blog.

So by all means, take some time to look around and explore A Differentiated Kindergarten. Gather some new ideas, fun tips, and most importantly, don’t forget to reach out and say, ‘Hi!’
