This write the room activity will appeal to your kinesthetic learners while meeting the various readiness levels of your students.
This activity meets Common Core State Standard:
K.CC.3 Write numbers from 0-20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects.
K.CC.5 Count to answer ‘how many’ questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20 count out that many objects.
K.OA.A.5: Fluently add and subtract to five.
There are three tiers to this activity. Each tier has their own cards, a color and a black and white recording sheet. The blue tier is for your learners who still have not mastered counting and writing numbers 0-20. This blue tier features 12 squares with various numbers of objects 0-20. Students count the objects, write the number in the box on their recording sheet and then write the number that comes before and after. The next tier, the red tier, is for students beginning to add. There are cards with pictures of two objects, on the corresponding recording sheet. Students search the room for these cards, record the number of each object and then add them together recording their answer. The green tier is the top tier you can use for your students who are advancing to addition to 10.
Teacher instructions: Print, laminate and cut the counting pieces. Place them around your room for your students to discover. You may either print and laminate the recording sheets for reuse with a dry erase marker or print off as many copies as you need for students to use with a pencil. There are both color and black and white copies from which to choose. Students will travel around your room to discover how many of each gingerbread item is on each card with a corresponding colored border. As students become more fluent, I often add a timer to the mix, encouraging them to add quicker but continue to be accurate. If you prefer not to place these around your room, you can always place the counting pieces in a bucket or container for students to draw out and answer.
