This Olympic – sized Winter Sports Word Work set is guarenteed to get your students excited for learning. Perfect for any winter, these winter sports themed activities are especially engaging during an Olympic celebration year but just as fun for those years when there is an Olympic break.
So here’s a peak at some of the Word Work activities that I’ve whipped up. There are 18 Activities all together so there is just no way I could get a picture of all of them. But I thought that I would at least give you a good look at what I have.
The Stations!
Winter Sports Write the Room Fun – These types of activities are perfect for my students who NEED to move. They search the room for hidden pictures and then use the differentiated response sheets to demonstrate their ability to identify sounds within words, blend, read simple sentences, and write. This activity has an option for CVC words, CCVC words and editable sight words.
Winter Ski Pals Letter Order/Letter Recognition -Students use linking chains or you can also tie a rope between two chairs and have them use clothes pins to place letters in alphabet order. My students like to work as teams to see who can get all their letters in order first.
Get Your Gear-Letter Recognition Hide and Seek Fun
Hide the winter gear behind on of the letters while students hide their eyes. Then they take turns seeing who can find the hidden card. It’s so addictive and fun.
Downhill Letter Order/Letter Recognition Fun
More letter recognition and order fun. Students draw a card, write the letter and then record the letters that come after.
Fresh Powder-Letter Recognition Game
Perfect for small group instruction, this game will be a favorite amonst your students. It’s a great way to keep letter recognition/beginning letter sounds up-to-date.
Let’s go Skiing Memory-Letter Recognition
Another fun letter recognition game played just like traditional memory.
Hockey Gear CVC Word Building Fun – This center activity is self-correcting which means it’s perfect for supporting independent learning. Students build words and get instant feeback on whether they completed the task correctly or not.
Go for the Gold-Sight Word Recognition (Editable) There are 160 words available for this game but just in case you have your own set of words that your teach in your own special order, don’t worry. I have included an editable set that you use to enter your own words.
Medal Ceremony- Sight Word Recognition (Editable) Again, if you have your own list of sight words you can use the editable pieces for this or use mine.
Hockey Shoot Out-Real and Nonsense Word Fluency Fun for your sensory table or pocket chart (Black and white response sheet included.)
Use a sensory table or simply lay these cards out on a table for students to sort into a pocket chart-real vs. nonsense.
There is also a response sheet you can utilize with this activity to extend learning.
Spin It To Win It-Rhyming/Word Family Recognition/Blending (2 Black and White versions for extended play.) – Students spin the spinner. When it lands on a picture, they find another word that rhymes with that word or that is in that word family and colors in that portion of the picture. Students work to be the first to complete their picture first.
Winter Sports Sight Word Bump-(Editable) Sight Word Recognition (3 colored –editable playing mats included) – This sight word bump game is editable so that, if you have your own list of sight words you prefer to use, you can make your own. There are three different playing mats so that your can extend play and differentiated based on readiness.
Pairs Skate- Sensory Table Fun –Rhyming – Always a classroom favorite, my students love using a sensory table, and I love that it keeps them engaged while they are learning.
Mate Your Skates – Pocket chart rhyming fun. One student hides the pair of skates behind two rhyming words while the other students hide their eyes. Students take turns identifying rhyming words in order to locate the skates.
When they find the mated skates, they get to hide them next.
Winter Sports Letters/Sounds Yatta-Letter recognition fluency, letter sound fluency
Winter Sports Family of Words Yatta-Word Family Recognition, Blending, CVC Work
A CVC card or word family card is turned over. Students race to identify the word’s picture or a picture from the word family and be the first to point on it and say ‘Yatta.’

Winter Sports-Emergent Reader- 2 different versions to choose from depending on the readiness of your students.
