Hands-on, fine motor, snap cube math mats!
Recognizing numbers and learning their formation is one of the first exposures that a child has to math. Without a strong understanding and connection between numbers and their quantities, a student’s number sense could be greatly impacted. So giving our students various materials and ways to manipulate numbers and represent their quantities is imperative. But teaching number recognition, quantity, and formation doesn’t have to be boring. By offering various tools and objects to create meaningful instruction, students will remain focused and engaged in learning. Snap cube mats are just one of the items you’ll find in my independent math work stations. My students love having the choice to use materials that they enjoy, and I like that they are working independently, building fine motor skills, and letter recognition.

Teacher instructions: There are a couple of variations from which you can choose. Select the option that works best for your students and print these in color or in black and white and then laminate them to extend the life of this activity. Students will use snap cubes to make the numbers on the mat. Then depending on which variation you have selected, they will either sort the snap cubes by color and record the number of each used, or just count and record the total number of snap cubes used. There are options for representing the number as a ten frame, and then students will trace the number and try writing it on their own. A printable version of this activity is also available for use.
Tips: For students who have mastered very few numbers so far, only place those numbers you are currently working on in this center. Too many numbers can be overwhelming. As they master more numbers, you can increase the number of mats included and use these to reinforce number identification and formation.
