This packet can be used in a variety of ways. As the school year winds down, it is definitely a packet where pieces can be pulled to help with a review of certain concepts and skills as needed. Just print and go—No Fuss, No Muss. It would also be great for a summer school class.
For my own students, I have also made this packet so that it can be sent home as a summer review and practice packet for graduating kindergarteners going into first grade. This one, of course, is for first graders going into second. There are two cover pages (one boy and one girl) from which your students can choose and that can be added to the front of the packet. From there, you can choose which pages you would like to send home or send them all. The packet is jammed packed with math and literacy activities that let your students review essential skills. The activities are fun, varied and will engage students to spend a little time practicing over the summer. At the end of the packet, I have included several
sight word activities, games, and ideas for parents and 10 sets of 20 different sight word flashcards that you can program with the words you choose to provide your students. Finally, I have included two different reading logs from which you can choose. One log simply has students coloring in one item for each time they read for 15 minutes. The other has them recording the books they read.
Once you have all your pages selected, bind them with a bulldog binder clip (I like to make mine kind of cute by adding a bit of washi tape to it.) and send it home with your student. Along with the attached parent letter or a letter of your own. As an added incentive, I always tell my kinders that if they bring back the completed pack to me in the fall, that I will reward them with a special treat, but that is up to you.
Here are some of the skills and items included in this packet:

With nearly 20 years of experience as a full-time kindergarten teacher, I’m committed to creating a classroom where learning is joyful, engaging, challenging, and fun. Each day, I work to ensure that my students feel successful through instruction that considers their unique interests, learning profiles, and readiness levels. I believe that students should be excited to come to class and enjoy a myriad of hands-on activities that encourage exploration and discovery.
While I continue to teach full-time, I find so much joy in connecting and building friendships with teachers worldwide. It’s why I started this blog back in 2012. My hope has become a reality as I have been able to forge relationships with teachers, sharing ideas and building friendships beyond my little neck of the woods through professional development sessions and this blog.
So by all means, take some time to look around and explore A Differentiated Kindergarten. Gather some new ideas, fun tips, and most importantly, don’t forget to reach out and say, ‘Hi!’
